On Wednesday 26th September the group hosted an open meeting at the Duke of Gloucester pub in Crewe including special guest, former Captain and double Wembley winner Luke Murphy who we thank for taking the time out to spend the evening with us.

The event kicked off shortly after 19.30 with chairman Mark Beavan opening the proceedings giving update on achievements, where we are now and ideas to move the group forward. This was followed by open floor questions and answers session.

The Flag day event against Macclesfield which the group supported fan Grant Coiley in delivering was a huge success and has without doubt enhanced the match day experience, so much so that the flags look like becoming a permanent fixture.

Members have come up with lots of ideas and we will continue to work with fans and the club to deliver on our mission statement as found here. Currently the group are exploring the options of a remembrance day flag and Scarf day for the fixture with Lincoln City on Boxing Day.

We are also liaising with the local community around the possibility of supporting a food bank option and looking at various ways in which the group can help. Scott Kynnersley put forward an idea on the creation of an Ex Players Association which was well received by all in attendance.

The key points were:

The main reason behind this is to keep the players up to date with news from in and around the club and also to keep fans up to date with players careers once they have moved on.

Some other ideas so far are:

  • Invite former players to Gresty Road on match days enhancing the Matchday Experience
  • Pre-match speeches prior to games
  • hosting nostalgia evenings for fans to attend

Following a quick break, host for the evening Ian Affleck introduced Luke Murphy who talk passionately about his time growing up through the Alex youth ranks to becoming Captain and a double Wembley winner.

He went on to talk about life after Crewe and gave a candid view of life as a professional footballer, this was then followed up by an open questions and answers session.

The evening concluded around 21:30 but Luke stayed around to chat to all, signing autographs. We thank Luke for making it a special night.

Next Open Meeting will be Saturday November 17th in the Alexandra Suite before the Tranmere match, this meeting will take place between midday and 13.15. This again will be a FREE event and all are welcome, manager David Artell will be guest speaker.
